Steve Phillips

Stephen Phillips (born on May 18, 1963) is a former American baseball analyst for ESPN and baseball executive. He served as the general manager of the New York Mets from 19972003. He replaced Joe McIlvaine and was replaced by Frank Cashen as the Interim GM and officially after Phillips days with the Mets were over by Jim Duquette.

New York MetsEdit

Phillips began his career by being drafted by the Mets in 1981 in the amateur draft. From 1981 to 1987, he played for six different minor league teams in the Mets and Detroit Tigers organizations. He never broke out as a player in the Major Leagues.

He joined the Mets' front office in 1990, was named director of minor league operations on October 2, 1991, was the assistant GM from 1996-1997, was promoted to general manager on July 16, 1997, and was fired by chief operating officer Fred Wilpon on June 12, 2003 after a 29–35 start to the season.

Sexual Harassment allegationsEdit

In 1998 he left for 8 days to deal with sexual harassment allegations and for that week he was replaced by Frank Cashen. He returned shortly and continued his GM post from then on.
