A new era begins at home as the mets open their new ballpark Citi Field. The mets hosted the San Diego Padres for a 3 game series starting on April 13,15 and the last game on the 16,2009. Mike Pelfrey started for the mets and on the 3rd pitch of the game to batter Jody Gerut he hit a homerun. Jody became the first MLB player ever to open a new ballpark by hitting a lead-off homerun.

In the bottom of the 1st inning Luis Castillo drove in the first run of the game by hitting a double to drive in Brian Schneider.

In the bottom of the 5th inning David Wright hit the first mets homerun to tie the game at 5 and 5.

Sadly the mets lost to the Padres 6-5 in the opener.
